Florence stadium gets a new name
The Florence Freedom's home got a new name Thursday. The field, under construction at U.S. 42 and Interstate 75, will be called Champion Window Field. The Sharonville-based window manufacturer bought the naming rights to the minor-league baseball stadium for 20 years, said Don Jones, vice president and general manager. The price was not disclosed. Florence car dealer Tom Gill pulled out of a deal to name the stadium last year. The Frontier League team will open its season at the 4,500-seat Florence stadium at 7:05 p.m. June 18. Officials say the game is almost sold out. The team played its first season in Hamilton last year.
Tax bills tardy, deadline extended
Hamilton County Treasurer Robert A. Goering has extended the deadline to pay second-half property taxes by one week, to June 28. Goering said Thursday that a Miamisburg, Ohio-based vendor, Sourcelink Inc., did not get the bills mailed last week as required. Many were still being mailed Thursday and today. "We took the low-cost vendor," Goering said. Switching to Sourcelink saved the county $150,000, he said.
Chief justice backs campaign reform
Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer will speak to Cincinnati lawyers and campaign finance reform activists today about efforts to reform Ohio's judicial elections. Moyer is supporting a bill in the Ohio General Assembly that would require groups attempting to influence judicial elections - as they did in 2000 and 2002 - to disclose the sources of their contributions. Four seats on the seven-member court - including Moyer's - are up for re-election this year. Moyer's speech is at noon at the Christ Church Cathedral Undercroft, 318 East Fourth St., downtown.
