Today, we will honor the 60th anniversary of D-Day, the greatest naval armada and amphibious landing in history that began the allied liberation of Europe.
The acres and acres of white crosses in the Normandy cemetery bear solemn tribute to the human cost of this risky endeavor and the continuing cost of freedom. With profound gratitude, I salute all those who took part in this noble effort to once again make the world safe for democracy. The gallant, unselfish sacrifices on the beaches of Normandy were America's finest hour and the best example of why this nation will be forever indebted to the greatest generation.

Remember PBS for excellent coverage
How appreciative we should be to the Public Broadcasting Service for presenting such a great show as the World War II Memorial dedication. Veterans from all wars were duly honored.
The D-Day landings were of special interest to me as my husband waded ashore that day. He, and many other veterans, will never see the memorial. We were fortunate to see the beautiful one Belgium erected - at their own expense - to the American soldiers 22 years ago.
Thanks to all veterans and to PBS. Let's not forget their fund drives.

Work of Enquirer team commendable
The Cincinnati Enquirer and reporter Howard Wilkinson, as well as photographer Michael E. Keating, are to be commended for the front-page story and photos ("Thousands converge for day of dedication," May 30), and the coverage inside of the World War II Memorial dedication. It is imperative that we keep forever in our hearts the sacrifice made - for some the ultimate sacrifice - to save the world from losing freedom.
American and Allied forces stormed the beach of Normandy June 6, 1944, and the rest is history - to never be forgotten. Patriotism is a must even in our day, and desperate dictators must be stopped or freedoms can still be taken from us.
Again, a very special thank you for all you are doing to keep these moments alive.
