'George the Mailman' was west-side fixture

George Weiss had long postal career

By Nicole Hamilton
The Cincinnati Enquirer

For 23 years, George Weiss walked the same west side streets on his route as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He watched children grow up, and was "adopted by many families," said his daughter, Nancy Carroll of Covedale.

Most of the residents on his route, which was on the Covedale-Price Hill border, never knew his last name. He was known simply as "George the Mailman."

George Weiss died June 1 in Florida Hospital in Lake Placid, Fla., after a short illness. The longtime Covedale resident was 87.

When he retired at the age of 60, the families in the neighborhood and colleagues greeted him at the end of his route with a special lunch, where they showered him with cards and gifts.

"He was warm and kind, a real gentleman," his daughter said.

Raised in Camp Washington, Mr. Weiss graduated from Hughes High School around 1935.

He then began work for the post office, starting as a letter carrier in St. Bernard. In total, he spent 37 years as a letter carrier.

About five years ago, Mr. Weiss moved to Sebring, Fla., to live with his daughter, Janice Sanders, and her husband.

His former wife, Edna Mangold, preceded him in death.

Along with his two daughters, other survivors include four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. June 19 at Dalbert, Woodruff, & Isenogle Funeral Home, 2880 Boudinot Ave., Westwood.

The body was cremated.

Entombment will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Price Hill.

Memorials can be made to St. James Episcopal Church Capital Campaign, 3207 Montana Ave., Cincinnati, 45211, or to a charity of choice.
