WESTWOOD - A controversial zone change request is on the table for Tuesday's meeting of the Westwood Civic Association. The request then goes before city zoning officials at a public hearing on June 22.
"I can tell from my e-mail that there are a million reasons that people don't want this zone change to happen," said Mike Brestel, president of the Westwood Civic Association.
The request now before city planners asks that two vacant parcels - 3319 Glenmore Ave., zoned multi-family residential, and a portion of 3302 Werk Road, zoned office limited - be changed to CC-A, Commercial Community Auto.
The request is part of a proposal by Family Video Movie Club Inc., of Springfield, Ill., to develop the corner of Werk Road and Glenmore Avenue, where Humbert's Meats is also located, said Marge Kurzhal, who owns the vacant lot at 3319 Glenmore Ave.
"I don't see that a video store is a problem," said Kurzhal.
Citizens see it differently, said Brestel. The Humbert's property is already zoned for commercial use, but the vacant lots are closer to residential property.
"Once this thing goes in, then the opening cascades," he said, adding "There are a significant number of empty storefronts on Glenmore right now; instead they want to come into a residential area."
The civic association meets at 7:30 p.m. at the north end of Westwood United Methodist Church, 3460 Epworth Ave.
