Taking care of your whole self

Calendar

Slammed: Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Junior League of Cincinnati will present "The Overscheduled Child" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 7800 Montgomery Road, Kenwood. Free. Information: 871-9339.

Screenings: St. Luke Hospital West, 7380 Turfway Road, Florence, will offer free screenings for peripheral vascular disease from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 29. No appointment necessary. (859) 962-4888.

New stuff: The YWCA Fitness Center, 898 Walnut St., downtown, has added spinning, Pilates and yoga classes to its group fitness schedule. Spinning is offered at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 12:05 p.m. Thursdays; Pilates at noon Tuesdays; yoga at 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays. Cost: $30 for members or $75 for nonmembers for 10 sessions. 361-2116.

Healthy living

Big gulp: Research from the Defeat the Heat public safety campaign shows that two-thirds of children arrived at sports practice seriously dehydrated - which puts them at increased risk for heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other serious illnesses. Warning signs include headache, exhaustion, dizziness and nausea. The campaign stresses the "ABCs" of hydration:

• Always drink before, during and after activity to replace fluids.

• Bring the right drinks. Flavored drinks with electrolytes hydrate best.

• Consider fluids part of the safety equipment.

Tips

Beware: Don't fall for what the American Council on Exercise calls the biggest fitness myths:

• Women who lift weights will get bulky: Not without steroids.

• Spot reducing works: Regular aerobic and strength training combined with weight loss reduce body fat. Exercising one part won't work.

• No pain, no gain: Too much pain means injuries and no workout.

• Exercise takes too long: To maintain health, exercise half an hour a day. To lose weight, an hour.

• Exercise means a free ticket to the buffet line: Good nutrition fuels good workouts. To lose weight, add fruits and vegetables.

• Quick fixes work: There's no such thing. Sensible diet and regular exercise are the safest ways to lose weight. www.acefitness.org
