UC signee leads Ky. stars past Tennessee

University of Cincinnati signee Dustin Grutza of Mason County and Charles Penix each rushed for two touchdowns to lead Kentucky to a 28-23 victory over Tennessee Friday night in a high school all-star football game at Neyland Stadium.

The win was Kentucky's third straight against Tennessee, which has lost four of the last five games between the border rivals.

Grutza passed for 207 yards and added two 1-yard rushing touchdowns.

Penix had TD runs of 8 and 9 yards, the last of which gave Kentucky the go-ahead score with 3:47 remaining. He finished with 85 yards rushing on 10 carries.

HUGGINS WATCH: Despite Bob Huggins' June 8 DUI arrest, the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce wants the suspended University of Cincinnati basketball coach to honor his commitment as keynote speaker for the Business Showcase Oct. 6 at Receptions Banquet and Conference Center, the Fairfield Echo reported.

MU'S FERRIS HONORED: Miami RedHawks junior first baseman Mike Ferris was named first-team All-America by Baseball America. Earlier, the Colerain graduate was a third-team selection by college baseball writers.

Ferris, a second-round draft choice (60th overall) of the St. Louis Cardinals, led the RedHawks this season in home runs (21), slugging percentage (.755) and on-base percentage (.513).

He was an all-Mid-American Conference selection and his 21 home runs and 60 bases on balls both set single-season MU records.

MIAMI HOCKEY: Incoming freshman forward Nate Davis, from Rocky River, Ohio, is among 42 players selected to attend the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp Aug. 9-14 for the best U.S. players under 20.

FUNNY CIDE UPDATE: Funny Cide, winner of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, is t he 8-5 favorite for today's Massachussetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs.

HARNESS MARK: Loyal Opposition tied a world record for all-aged pacing mares (1:48.4 mile) in winning the $238,600 Lady Liberty final at the Meadowlands.

Tennis

NOTTINGHAM: Top-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan advanced to his first grass-court final with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Robin Soderling. Paradorn will face Thomas Johansson for the title after the 2002 Australian Open winner beat Taylor Dent 7-6 (4), 6-1.

EASTBOURNE: Daniela Hantuchova rallied to upset top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final. Hantuchova will meet second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat fourth-seeded Vera Zvonareva 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
