Grenada given little chance today

The Enquirer and wire reports

The United States takes a three-goal lead into today's second leg of its World Cup qualifying series against Grenada, a tiny Caribbean nation hoping to pull off one of the greatest upsets in soccer history.

The ninth-ranked Americans, who won the first leg 3-0 last Sunday in Columbus, are overwhelming favorites to win the total-goals series and advance to the semifinals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

The U.S. team hasn't lost a World Cup qualifier by three or more goals since a 5-1 loss to Mexico in 1980.

Montgomery fires back at accusers

Sprinter Tim Montgomery told the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency he has done nothing wrong and ridiculed possible drug evidence against him. Montgomery also identified banished sprinter Kelli White as the one who is providing information against him. "It's not on paper. It's all someone saying something," Montgomery said. Who? he was asked. "Kelli White," Montgomery responded. White has accepted a two-year suspension for using steroids and other banned substances. Montgomery, world record holder in the 100 meters, is one of four U.S. athletes formally notified that the USADA is pursuing possible drug charges against them.

Embattled Jones is 5th in 100, wins long jump

Perhaps the fight against the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is wearing down Marion Jones. Jones finished a distant fifth behind winner Inger Miller in the women's 100 meters but came back to win the long jump at the Prefontaine Classic track and field meet in Eugene, Ore.

Jones' long jump mark in the meet's final event was 22 feet, 9 inches - 8 1/2 inches farther than her season best.

The 100-meter effort was anything but encouraging for her final race before the U.S. Olympic Trials, which begin July 9.

The Prefontaine meet, part of the IAAF Grand Prix circuit, featured an all-star lineup, and Jones wasn't the only big name to be beaten.

Maurice Greene was second to Shawn Crawford in the men's 100. Allen Johnson was edged by Larry Wade in the 110-meter hurdles.

Crawford stunned Greene with a 9.88-second clocking. Greene, the reigning Olympic gold medalist, was second at 9.93 and John Capel third at 9.95 - the three fastest times in the world this year and the first sub-10-second 100s in the meet's 31-year history. Tim Montgomery, Jones' boyfriend, finished sixth.

Tennis

ORDINA OPEN: Mary Pierce defeated Klara Koukalova 7-6 (9), 6-2 for her first grass-court tournament title in Den Bosch, Netherlands. It was Pierce's first championship of the year and her 16th career title.

On the men's side, top-seeded Guillermo Coria beat Mario Ancic 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3. Coria, the French Open finalist who never won professionally on grass until this week, will play the final against Michael Llodra, who beat fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2.

EASTBOURNE: Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Daniela Hantuchova 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 for her first title of the year.

NOTTINGHAM: Top-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan rallied to beat Thomas Johansson 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 and claim his first title of the year.

Horse racing

WILD WINS MASSCAP: Offlee Wild, ridden by Edgar Prado, held off Funny Cide and won the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap by a neck at Suffolk Downs. The Lady's Groom was third, another neck behind. Offlee Wild paid $8.40 to win.

Funny Cide has lost seven of his nine races since winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness last year.

Offlee Wild won the Holy Bull Stakes last year but finished 12th in the Derby.

CHURCHILL DOWNS: Champali, under Rafael Bejarano, scored a 3 1/4 length victory over favorite Beau's Town in the Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap. Bejarano, the meet and nation's leading rider in wins, was substituting for regular rider Pat Day, who was at Belmont Park to ride Azeri.

BELMONT PARK: Sightseek took the lead after 6 furlongs and registered a 3 1/4-length victory over Storm Flag Flying in the Grade I Ogden Phipps Handicap.

Hockey

UMBERGER SIGNS: Forward R.J. Umberger, a former Ohio State All-American and first-round NHL draft pick of Vancouver, signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

REDHAWKS EYE DRAFT: Miami University freshmen forwards Matt Christie and Joe Cooper, ranked 109th and 195th among 231 North American skaters by the NHL's Central Scouting Service, are eligible for next weekend's NHL entry draft.

Christie led all Division I freshmen with 21 goals.

Colleges

WASHINGTON: Former Vanderbilt athletic director Todd Turner was hired to head Washington's troubled athletic department. Turner will replace interim athletic director Dick Thompson, who took over when Barbara Hedges announced her early retirement in January.
