Local fitness expert Dave Patania, an Enquirer columnist, served as master of ceremonies for Discover Health's first fund-raiser, held at the Coconut Grove in Newport. More than 220 guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner and dancing to the Don Aren Trio.
Honorees of the bash were Dan Sullivan, retiring superintendent of Newport Independent Schools, and Dr. Gilbert M. Schiff, researcher of childhood and viral diseases.
The event raised $30,000 for Discover Health, a nonprofit health education organization that teaches elementary school children healthy habits in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, life skills and self-esteem. Discover Health's 38-foot mobile classroom, which was on hand for the event, visits 175 elementary schools in 10 counties in Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana.
