Enquirer critic picks her own top 10 movie songs

The American Film Institute unveils its seventh "100 best" show tonight, with a salute to song.

100 Years ... 100 Songs (8 p.m., Channels 12, 7), like the previous six specials, is based on a poll of about 1,500 filmmakers, scholars and critics. The aim is to pick the best musical moments in American film, including both original songs and recycled numbers.

Here are the top 10 picks from my own ballot:

1. "The End" (Apocalypse Now) - The Doors' song is as much a part of Francis Ford Coppola's wrenching Vietnam story as any actor.

2. "Things Have Changed" (Wonder Boys) - Bob Dylan wowed Oscar voters with this emotional, world-weary song.

3. "Lose Yourself" (8 Mile) - Another well deserved Oscar went to Eminem for a killer song that embodied the spirit of the film.

4. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow"(O Brother, Where Art Thou?) - Dan Tyminski's heartfelt, old-time singing voice defined this film.

5. "Tonight" (West Side Story) - One of the great tunes from one of the great musicals, beautifully sung by Richard Beymer and Marni Nixon (the singing voice for Natalie Wood).

6. "Puttin' On the Ritz" (Young Frankenstein) - The moment Peter Boyle opened his mouth to croak out an old Fred Astaire tune is the moment the movie reached comedy perfection.

7. "Save Me" (Magnolia) - Every one of Aimee Mann's riveting songs for this film belong on the best-ever list.

8. "Cabaret" (Cabaret) - Liza Minnelli's bittersweet reading of John Kander's and Fred Ebb's signature show tune defines what the modern musical was all about.

9. "Be My Baby" (Mean Streets) - Director Martin Scorsese wove this classic wall-of-sound hit by the Ronettes into the opening credits so precisely that he changed the way other filmmakers used pop music.

10. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" (The Life of Brian) - As with "The Galaxy Song" and "The Meaning of Life," the Monty Python men transformed old-fashioned music-hall sound into dazzling goofiness and savage satire.
