Hamilton County will spend up to $96,000 to keep tabs on goings-on at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport that could increase airplane noise over Western Hamilton County.
County commissioners voted 3-0 Wednesday to hire California-based Fidell Associates for the job. Hamilton County wants to make sure its interests are represented as the airport conducts an 18-month, $1.2 million study of noise. The airport could see even more flights if DHL Worldwide Express consolidates its operation there and a new north-south runway is to open next year.
Choir to christen Freedom Center
In honor of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's grand opening Aug. 23, Muse Cincinnati's Women's Choir will present its 10th new spirituals concert, called "Come Steppin' in Freedom's Name." The concerts will be 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, 7030 Reading Road. Muse commissioned Bernice Johnson Reagon to write a new work, "Liberty or Death Suite," which will premiere this weekend. It's derived, in part, from Harriet Tubman's slave narratives. Tickets, $15, are available online at www.musechoir.org.
Marine recovering after Afghan wreck
A U.S. Marine and former Groesbeck resident is recuperating at a Baltimore hospital after being critically injured earlier this month in Afghanistan, his family and military officials say. Lance Cpl. Daniel John Hamberg, 20, suffered pelvic and abdominal injuries June 5 when the truck he was in rolled down a mountainside, according to Hamberg's aunt, Pam Collins of Colerain Township. Marine Capt. Shawn Turner said the accident occurred while Hamberg was on a mission to aid other U.S. troops. Hamberg is the son of John and Janice Hamberg of Groesbeck, and a 2002 graduate of Colerain High School.
