All-purpose Web site sets up shop here

By Lauren Bishop
Enquirer staff writer

Want to rid yourself of that 50-gallon fish tank? Searching for a new psychic? Hoping to reconnect with that waitress you chatted with at Skyline Chili? A Web site that's the buzz across the nation right now may be of assistance.

The site, www.craigslist.org, out of San Francisco, just added Cincinnati to the list of cities it serves.

The low-tech, banner-ad-free site is packed with personals, discussion forums, job postings, items for sale and rent, all in a simple lowercase typeface. And it's free to post.

Craig Newmark, a 51-year-old software engineer, founded Craigslist in 1995 as an e-mail listserv of Bay Area events; it has grown and now there are Craigslist sites in 45 cities, drawing 5 million visitors every month.

The site has become popular, Newmark says, because it's useful and effective, and users give it personality.

The site here, www.cincinnati.craigslist.org, shows few postings, typical for new sites, Newmark says. He expects it to grow, as it has in other cities as the site catches on.

However, the Skyline meeting is for real. A lonely soul in New York said on the "missed connections" section of the Cincinnati Craigslist that he was wondering whether the waitress he recently met at the Skyline Chili at the Florence Mall was still moving to New York.

Maybe she'll see it.
