SPRINGFIELD TWP. - Elaine I. Winters McCarty, retired teacher and assistant athletic director at St. Xavier High School, died Saturday of colon cancer at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. She was 65.
Mrs. McCarty taught keyboarding and supervised the computer lab at St. X, retiring in May after 26 years.
She was also a passionate supporter of the school, volunteering to work the X-Travaganza, an annual dinner and auction, for 25 years, according to her husband, Bill.
She also worked with Kairos, a student retreat, the cheerleading squads, the Mothers' Club and the Athletic Boosters. Mrs. McCarty was "on the first committee to have a sports stag at our school and the only woman on the committee," her husband said.
"When St. X High School was downtown, their major fund-raiser was a carnival called the May Fete," McCarty said. "Gosh, everyone looked forward to going to that." The McCartys served as chairs of the revival of that event in 1981. "It was very much fun because of the nostalgia of it."
The couple received the school's Magis Award for service in 1986.
Mrs. McCarty also volunteered at St. Clare School in College Hill. "We had seven children that went through St. Clare," McCarty said.
Mrs. McCarty was "very willing to do anything that was necessary for either of the schools and for anyone else for that matter," her husband said. She gave "better than 100 percent in everything that she did."
In addition to her husband of 45 years, survivors include four sons, Michael of Trenton, Tom of Liberty Township, Charlie of Reading and Bill of Colerain Township; three daughters, Carol Day of Springfield Township, Peggy Rohs of Portage, Mich. and Diane McCarty of Norwood; two sisters, Ruth Bryan of Lake Worth, Fla. and Shirley Dorn of Springdale; a brother, James Winters of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and 17 grandchildren.
Visitation is 2-7 p.m. today at the St. Xavier High School chapel, 600 W. North Bend Road. Mass of Christian burial is 7:30 p.m. in the chapel.
Memorials: St. Xavier High School, 600 W. North Bend Road, Cincinnati, OH 45224; or The Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, OH 45203.
