READING - Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Clotilda McCurdy, a retired teacher and moderator of the alumnae group of Notre Dame High School, died June 21 at Mount Notre Dame Health Center. She was 101.
Eighty-three of her years were spent as a Sister of Notre Dame. She taught English, Latin, religion and home economics at Mount Notre Dame High School in Reading as well as at Notre Dame high schools in Hamilton, Dayton, Columbus and Chicago for nearly 50 years.
"She was such a dedicated teacher," said Sister Mary Ann Barnhorn. "I would say refinement was her hallmark."
Sister Clotilda was a master of needlework, especially crochet, tatting, embroidery and sewing. "I always think of Sister when I sew," former student Shirley Portner of Dayton said. "To me she was always a lady, but she knew how to have fun. She was always a very warm person, always willing to help. And she did have a sense of humor."
Sister Clotilda was born in Columbus in 1902. She was educated at St. Joseph Academy in Dayton and held a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Dayton and master's degrees from Notre Dame University and Simmons College in Boston.
For 27 years, she moderated the International Federation of Notre Dame Alumnae and planned its three-day international conventions. She also promoted missions in Africa and Brazil to the alumnae.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Services have been held. Burial was in the Mount Notre Dame convent cemetery in Reading.
Memorials: Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 701 East Columbia Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45215.
