If you think country music's all about dusty boots and bottles of whiskey, Kenny Chesney might just prove you wrong.
For some of the songs on his current album, When the Sun Goes Down, the Tennessee musician found inspiration on a Caribbean island. To tap into the flip-flops and frozen-drinks vibe, Chesney's current tour is called Guitars, Tiki Bars and a Whole Lotta Love.
"I spent a lot of time in the islands," Chesney says. "I've been able to bring that lifestyle into my music. (I) take people down there for an hour and a half and put them into my boat and on the beach."
The tour has spawned a signature tropical cocktail, the Cruzan Confusion, a blend of pineapple juice, coconut rum and mango rum.
Chesney's change in latitude doesn't seem to be confusing his fans' attitude, though. His show on Thursday at Riverbend Music Center sold out weeks ago. Also on the bill are Rascal Flatts and Uncle Kracker, with whom Chesney scored a No. 1 hit with the duet "When the Sun Goes Down."
Want to know what Chesney's listening to, what cracks him up, and who his favorite Hank is? Here's what he had to say:
What energizes you?
"My boat in the Caribbean."
What non-country music are you playing on the tour bus?
"I listen to a little bit of everything. I'm really into Jack Johnson right now, I listen to Dave Matthews, I listen to 3 Doors Down."
What was the last thing that made you laugh?
"Kracker. I can look at him and laugh."
What's your favorite song to perform live?
"There's a song called 'Back Where I Come From' that is very autobiographical. It's become an anthem for us out on the road."
Which Hank's music do you listen to the most - Hank Williams Sr., Hank Williams Jr. or Hank Williams III?
"Hank Williams Jr. He made great records. They sound good. I love listening to them."
