Hansel shoots an unexpected 64

No. Ky. Men's Am

By Ryan Ernst
Enquirer staff writer

BUTLER, Ky. - Scott Hansel couldn't have picked a better time to have the round of his career. Neither could Nick Heineke.

On a day when the usual suspects floated toward the top of the leaderboard at the Northern Kentucky Men's Amateur Championship, the hard-luck tournament veteran and the kid stole the show.

Hansel, whose handicap reached seven early this season, surprised even himself with a first-round total of 64, the best score of the day.

"It kind of happened unexpectedly," he said. "I got hot real quick. Without a doubt, it's the best round I've ever played."

Hansel, who played the round without a bogey and took only 25 putts, has played in the event seven times. His best finish was seventh in 1998.

Heineke, a soon-to-be-senior at Bishop Brossart, smoked his home course at Pendleton Country Club for a 68, the second-lowest score of the opening round. It was Heineke's first-ever under-par round. It was also his first time playing in a Northern Kentucky Golf Association event.

The 17-year-old lefty said despite big-tournament jitters, playing a familiar course gave him confidence.

"It was real nice," he said. "I've been sitting here practicing for a tournament like this all year. It paid off today."

Heineke, who had never shot a round better than 74 before Tuesday, made a 20-foot par putt on No. 3, then birdied 4 and 6. He finished his round with birdies on 16, 17 and 18.

The most surprising round came from a youngster, but most of the days solid rounds came from seasoned veterans.

After a five-year absence from the tournament, Dave Macke shot a five-under 67. Macke, the tournament champion in 1994 and 1997, had passed over the event since 1998 to concentrate on state-level tournaments and the Cincinnati Met championship. He finished second at the state amateur last month at Traditions, his home course.

"It's great to be back playing in it," Macke said. "I've got a lot of good vibrations from this course. I finished second here in '96. Hopefully I can come back and win it."

Lance Lucas, who won his second championship last year, automatically qualified for today's match play with that win. Despite the free pass, he decided to play Tuesday and shot 69.

Two days of match play begin with today's championship flight at 8:30 a.m., followed by the first and second flights. On Friday, the top eight players in each flight will play a 36-hole stroke-play final.

USGA JUNIOR QUALIFIER: Alex Martin of Wetherington Golf & Country Club was medalist with a 4-over-par 148 at the TPC at River's Bend. Alex Volpenhein (153) of Twin Oaks Golf Course and Michael Beausejour (154) of Heritage Club were the other two qualifiers.

They advance to the nationals July 19-24 at San Francisco's The Olympic Club.

Travis Allread of Fairfield qualified for the nationals last week by finishing fifth of 230 juniors in the sectional at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

OHIO JUNIOR GIRLS: Kelsey Lindenschmidt of West Chester, last year's runner-up, was third overall and first in the 14-15 age group with a 4-over-par 75 after the first round at Marion Country Club. Carley Hrusovsky of Canton led with a 71.
