SOCCER UPDATE: A weekly look at Cincinnati's minor-league soccer team

The Enquirer and wire reports

Week in review: The Ladyhawks lost to Windy City 1-0 Saturday. Cincinnati dominated play, including outshooting the Bluez 11-4 in the second half, but couldn't overcome the lone goal scored in the second minute.

Key players: Goalkeeper Leah Miller proved her worth by turning back several Windy City shots, including a point-blank shot by Jenny Kundert. It was Kundert who had scored early after getting behind the defense. Amy Mink, Andrea Cunningham and Melissa Miller provided the majority of the Ladyhawks' offensive opportunities. Mink came close to equalizing the match with a second-half shot that forced the Bluez goalkeeper to make a tremendous save.

Injuries: Leah Miller suffered bruised ribs while making a half save and being kicked by a Windy City forward. She was able to continue to play and should be fine this week. Mink suffered a contusion around her eye when she was elbowed while battling for a ball in the air with the Windy City goalkeeper.

Upcoming week: The Ladyhawks travel to West Michigan to take on the Edge Saturday. The Edge also have found victories hard to come by, their lone win coming against Detroit. On Sunday, Cincinnati faces the Fort Wayne Lady Fever, who lead the league in points. The Lady Fever are led by University of Notre Dame product Amy Warner, who has seven goals and five assists.

Ex-IU player Woodson set to be named Hawks coach

Mike Woodson said he has agreed to coach the Atlanta Hawks after working as the top assistant last season for the NBA champion Detroit Pistons.

The former Indiana University standout said he was still completing negotiations with the Hawks but considered the final details minor.

He agreed to a four-year deal to replace Terry Stotts, who was fired May 6. The Hawks went 28-54 last season. They have missed the playoffs five straight years.

HORNETS: New Orleans signed top draft pick, guard J.R. Smith, to a three-year contract. Smith, 18, who played last season at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., was selected 18th overall in the NBA draft June 24. He was one of eight high school players in the first 19 picks.

Hockey

SENATORS SIGN HASEK: Unrestricted free agent goaltender Dominik Hasek, 39, signed a one-year contract with Ottawa for a $2 million base salary with a bonus of $4 million if the Senators win the Stanley Cup.

RANGERS: Tom Renney will remain coach after taking the job on an interim basis in February when he replaced Glen Sather. Renney went 5-11-0-4 after taking over from Sather, who stepped down Feb. 25 to focus solely on being the general manager.

KINGS: Unrestricted free agent Craig Conroy, who helped the Calgary Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals, signed a four-year, $12.6 million deal with Los Angeles.

AHL MIGHTY DUCKS: The AHL schedule format for the 2004-05 regular season will have the Ducks face the top prospects for Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Florida, Minnesota, Nashville and Phoenix in 26 of their 40 home games at Cincinnati Gardens.

High school basketball

FLYIN' TO THE HOOP: The Flyin' to the Hoop tournament Jan. 15-17 at Vandalia Butler High will include the defending state champions from Ohio in both Division I (Hamilton) and Division II (Ottawa-Glandorf). Also in the 19-team field from Ohio are Beavercreek, Centerville, Dunbar, Northmont, Toledo St. John's, Taft, Troy, host Vandalia Butler and Withrow. Two-time defending champ Our Savior New American of Centereach, N.Y., also will be back.

Women's football

SIZZLE SCRIMMAGE: Cincinnati's National Women's Football Association team will play its second scrimmage, at 7 p.m. Saturday, against the Kentucky Karma at Louisville. The Sizzle beat the Karma 21-6 in their previous scrimmage.

Colleges

CINCINNATI: Junior baseball player Jim Olds and track and field athlete Abi Hamrick are the top scholar-athletes of the spring quarter after both had a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
