Concussion test offered for athletes

Athletes at area high schools will be offered tests this fall that could help improve their treatment if they suffer a concussion. The 22-minute test is part of a concussion awareness program from Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine. The tests, which use a software program to measure cognitive function, can help determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to action. "Returning a high school athlete to contact sport prematurely following this injury can result in a catastrophic event called second impact syndrome or result in lingering symptoms such as headache and poor mental functioning, referred to as post-concussion syndrome," said Dr. Edward Marcheschi, director of Wellington's concussion management program. Among the high schools Wellington plans to visit: Amelia, Anderson, Deer Park, Colerain, Glen Este, Mariemont, McNicholas, Mercy , Northwest, Seton, Taylor and Turpin. Testing costs $10. For information, call (513) 232-BONE.
