Camacho finds her game's not rusty after all
No. Ky. Women's Amateur
By Colleen Kane Enquirer staff writer
After two years away from competitive golf, Diana Camacho is trying to get back her old game at this year's Northern Kentucky Women's Amateur. In the process she's regaining something perhaps even more important - happiness on the golf course.
In her first Amateur since winning championships in 2000 and 2001, Camacho shot Tuesday's low score of 73 to finish with a two-day qualifying total of 148 at Eagle Creek. She enters today's championship flight match play as the third seed behind future Northern Kentucky University golfer Alicia Lawrence and seven-time champion Lori Eberle. Lawrence shot a 75 Tuesday for a two-day score of 147. Eberle, the 2002 and 2003 champion, received the defending champion's free pass through the qualifying round and enters as the top seed.
"I'm a little out of it," said Camacho, 25, a former NKU golfer. "Even this summer, I haven't been playing as good as I was a couple years ago. I'm trying to get it back. ... I'm just happy to be able to play the game and to enjoy the game."
Camacho will play sixth seed and three-time champion Laura Schild (153). Also: Eberle plays No. 8 Mary Jo Meek (155); Lawrence faces No. 7 Nicky Weber (154); and No. 4 Michelle Bellish (150) plays No. 5 Ashley Combs (151), who also shot a 73 Tuesday. The winners play in Thursday's championship stroke-play round. Camacho, Lawrence, Bellish and Combs are members of Eagle Creek.
"When you play it every day, every summer, you know the course, the breaks, how to play it from every angle," Combs said.
This is Camacho's first tournament since the 2002 NCAA Division II championships, where NKU finished third. After that, Camacho pursued her goal of working in golf. She interned at the USGA in 2002 and became an assistant golf pro, losing her amateur status. But she soon found that making golf her business and her play was too much.
"I got burnt out on the game real quickly," Camacho said. "I never wanted to play. ... I had only been in the business six months and I already felt that way. I couldn't imagine what it would be like after 20 years of it."
So she quit and now works in insurance. And for the first time in awhile, she looks at golf as more than work.
"Right now I just want to be able to play in amateur tournaments every year for the rest of my life," Camacho said. "I have that in me now that all I want to do is play golf when I have the free time. That was something that I lost a year ago."
