COLUMBUS - The state auditor and the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services on Wednesday announced a series of statewide seminars on Ohio's open government and public records laws.
The two agencies will hold six three-hour seminars for elected officials, police officers, reporters and citizens with an interest in public records.
The seminars will start next month and run through October.
"Education on open government is vital because our democracy is based on citizens' trust and access to their government," said Auditor Betty Montgomery.
The announcement follows a survey by Ohio newspapers and the Associated Press that found public employees followed the law only about half the time when asked to provide common records on an unconditional and timely basis.
Attorney General Jim Petro previously announced a partnership with the Ohio Newspaper Association to hold training seminars with records keepers and those who frequently make requests, including media organizations and interested citizens.
