New couple can't decide
to have a newborn

Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica

By Lauren Bishop
Enquirer staff writer

MTV must be disappointed.

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson made it clear on this week's episode of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica that they don't plan to procreate anytime soon, raising the question of how long the network can continue a show called Newlyweds nearly two years after the couple tied the knot. (Although we don't know what they'd call it if they had kids - Newlyborns?)

After a series of clips showing Jessica repeatedly telling different interviewers that a baby is not in her plans, she and Nick discuss adoption over dinner. Jessica thinks that if they adopt, they should do it before having their own children; Nick thinks they should do the opposite.

Then we see Nick visiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, after he says he's wanted to be a Big Brother for a while. He raises his concerns about how he could be a Big Brother with his "erratic lifestyle," and he's assured that they can work around it.

That's the last we hear of that, however, because the couple fly to Scottsdale, Ariz. to visit Nick's Miami University frat brother Tony and his wife, Lisa, who have a baby boy named Mason.

There, Jessica changes her first dirty diaper, and Nick and Tony play a really terrible game of golf the morning after drinking too much at dinner. Tony has the solution: more beer. Four Miller Lites each, to be exact.

Meanwhile, back at the resort where they're all staying, Jessica attempts to console her assistant CaCee, who apparently has been dumped. Jessica tells her about a Days of Our Lives star she dated who told her he loved her but later turned out to be dating LeAnn Rimes.

Back at the golf course, Tony says to Nick, apropos of nothing, "Seems like Jessica might be wanting a kid here before long." Cut to Jessica by the pool, telling CaCee and Lisa: "I can't imagine being pregnant right now."

Later, Nick and Jessica baby-sit Mason. Likely because of some clever editing, Mason appears to cry every time Jessica picks him up - and when Jessica says, watching President Bush give an address on TV, "Look, there's your leader, Mr. Bush."

At the end of the episode, though, Nick lets on that he's maybe a little miffed at Jessica's lack of desire to have a baby. Asked what they'd name their children, Nick quipped, "We don't know what names will be in vogue in 2015."
