Math students join competition for scholarships
Good Things Happening
More than 260 local students in grades 1-10 joined more than 10,000 other students from across the country to compete for $50,000 in scholarships in the annual Kumon Math Challenge July 11.
Local students gathered at the University of Cincinnati Raymond Walters College for the competition.
Students in grades 1-5 were given 40 minutes to complete the test.
Students in grades 5-10 were given 60 minutes.
Students participated at 33 universities across the United States and Canada.
Rasheda K. H. Williams, communication coordinator for Kumon, said winners will be announced Sept. 1.
"The scholarships range from $100 to $1,200,'' Williams said.
"The top 10 students in each grade will receive scholarships.''
Kumon is an after-school math and reading program founded in Japan in 1958. It uses a systematic approach that helps children develop a command of math and reading skills.
The Kumon Math Challenge is an annual summer competition to test students' skills and provide scholarships awarded by theKumon Math and Reading Centers.
Memorial tournament
The Jake L. Gilligan Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Aug. 14 at Friendly Meadows Golf Course, Ohio 125, near Bethel.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Jake. L. Gilligan Scholarship Trust, which was established in memory of a 17-year-old Milford resident who was killed in a car wreck in April 2000.
"Last year, we had a pretty good turnout among family, friends of the family and friends of Jake,'' said Mary Brokamp, Jake's grandmother. "We are hoping to open it up to more people this year.''
The trust provides scholarships to Live Oaks students.
This year's scholarship recipient was Tim Rice of Milford. Rice will attend the Ohio College of Applied Sciences and study construction management.

Cincinnatus scholars
Four local students are among 12 nationwide who will receive the Cincinnatus Scholarship valued at $66,000 from the University of Cincinnati.
Winners include:
Ashley Burkert of Sycamore Township. Ashley, 17, is a graduate of Princeton High School and is pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Cincinnati.
Anar Patel of Evendale. Anar, 18, a Princeton High graduate, was salutatorian at the school. She plans to major in biological science as a pre-med degree at UC.
Emily Stover of Villa Hills. Emily, 18, is a graduate of Notre Dame Academy. She also is majoring in biological science as a pre-med degree at UC.
Benjamin Tice of Hamilton. Benjamin, 18, was valedictorian at Hamilton High School. He is majoring in physics.
Belterra scholarships
The Belterra Casino Resort & Spa has awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarships to children of its employees.
Recipients are Ashley Hall, Heather Jackson, Ashley Reed, Erin Jacobson and Michael Bell. Each will receive up to $4,000 for college tuition.
Ashley Hall of Florence, Ind., is the daughter of Shannon Hoffman, a Belterra application specialist. She plans to attend Northern Kentucky University.
Heather of Vevay is the daughter of Sheila Jackson, employment coordinator for Belterra. Heather also plans to attend NKU.
Ashley Reed of Madison is the daughter of Deanna Reed, slot shift manager. Ashley Reed will attend Indiana University.
Erin of Madison is the daughter of Debbie Jacobson, executive steward of Belterra. Erin has not decided on a college.
Michael of Madison, son of Teresa Shaffer, a Belterra mail room employee, plans to attend Indiana University.
The scholarship program was created by Pinnacle Entertainment, Belterra's parent company.
POSITIVELY KIDS: Poetry honor
Laura Stidham, a senior at Hamilton High School, was chosen to receive the Fitton Center for Creative Arts' Riverbank Poetry Project's second annual $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship was awarded on the basis of merit and devotion to poetry.
Criteria for scholarship selection included two letters of recommendation from teachers, 12 original poems and a 500-word essay. Laura plans to major in English and creative writing at Miami University in the fall.
Academic award
Clare Zlatic, a recent graduate of Roger Bacon High School, has received a $2,000 Best Buy Children's Foundation Scholarship and will attend the University of Dayton. Scholarships are awarded to up to three students in every U.S. congressional district and the District of Columbia based on volunteerism, academics and extracurricular activities.
Clare is the daughter of Christina and Mark Zlatic of Wyoming.
Scholarships won
The Hamilton-Fairfield chapter of the American Business Women's Association has awarded three $1,000 scholarships to recipients chosen from more than 50 applicants.
The winners were Jason Westerbeck of Badin High School, Ashley Lipps of Hamilton High School and Angie Koch of Edgewood High School.
