What to take along: Tools of the trade
Most fly-fishermen say you can get started with basic equipment for around $100. Here's what you're going to need:
Fly rod - A spinning or baitcasting rod won't due. You can buy anywhere from a 1 weight to a 15 weight outfit, depending on what kind of fishing you want to do. Fisherman Tom Herr said for most fishing in this area, a 5 or 6 weight will work.
Fly line - There are different types of line, but to start, a double-tapered line is good for trout fishing, whereas a weight-forward line is good for bass, bluegill and pond fishing, fisherman Craig Troescher said.
Reel - Mostly just used to hold the line, but can be helpful to pull in heavier fish.
Leaders - About 5- to 15-foot-long strings of thinner, more transparent material with which you attach the flies to the line.
Flies - They vary according to what you want to catch. You also can learn to tie your own at a lower cost.
Waders - For stream fishing; not necessary for pond fishing.
Boots with felt soles - Also for streams, to help grip rocks.
