Pistons lock up hired gun Wallace

Free agent forward Rasheed Wallace has agreed with the Detroit Pistons to a five-year contract worth $57 million, two sources told the Associated Press on Wednesday. He is expected to sign today. Wallace, who made $17 million last season, was acquired in a three-team deal Feb. 19 to put the NBA champion Pistons over the top. Wallace, who turns 30 on Sept. 17, averaged 16 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 blocks in his ninth NBA season.

Couple of steals in LeBron hometown

Thieves took two of the nine signs officials in Akron put up in late June to mark Cavaliers star LeBron James' hometown, city officials said Wednesday. The two signs, which cost about $100 each, will not be replaced.

Ex-coach Robinson has Alzheimer's

Eddie Robinson, college football's second-winningest coach, has Alzheimer's, his wife said. During his 57 years at Grambling, a career which spanned 11 presidents, Robinson compiled a record of 408-165-15. Robinson, 85, started showing signs of the disease soon after retiring from Grambling after the 1997 season, his wife said.

Titans grant George release

The Tennessee Titans granted Eddie George's request Wednesday and released the franchise's all-time leading rusher. George, 30, rejected the Titans' latest offer and asked for his release Monday so he would have time to catch on with another team before training camps open next week. The Titans wanted George back, but at a reduced salary. The team's offer was $1.5 million in base salary - much less than the $4.25 million he expected to make this season.
