Red Sox, Yankees facing suspensions
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek were each suspended four games by Major League Baseball for starting a bench-clearing brawl and fighting during Saturday's game at Fenway Park. Boston outfielders Gabe Kapler and Trot Nixon and New York pitcher Tanyon Sturtze received three-game suspensions for fighting during the 11-10 Red Sox victory. Rodriguez and Sturtze are appealing their suspensions. Varitek, Kapler and Nixon also plan to appeal.
Sorenstam joins Tiger for Skins
Annika Sorenstam and Tiger Woods, golf's top-ranked players, will meet in the Skins Game in November. They will be joined by defending champion Fred Couples and Adam Scott on Nov. 27-28, at the Trilogy Golf Club in La Quinta, Calif. "I think it will be a fun event. That's the whole idea, to have fun and promote golf," Woods said. "Hopefully, I'll get a skin so I don't get shut out." Last year, Sorenstam, a six-time LPGA player of the year, earned $225,000 and finished second in the Skins Game to Couples, beating Phil Mickelson and Mark O'Meara. "She deserves to be in it for what she's done in her career, and the game of golf," Woods said of Sorenstam.
CORRECTION
A July 11 article stated that Mike Sylvester was the only American to medal in the 1980 Olympics. Swimmer David Zubero held dual U.S. and Spanish citizenship when he took the bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly for Spain.
