Injury will keep Coria out of Athens

The Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Third-ranked Guillermo Coria of Argentina will skip the Athens Olympics because of a right shoulder injury, his trainer said Wednesday.

The French Open finalist has tendinitis, and tests indicated he would not recover in time for the Aug. 15 start of tennis competition at the Summer Games, trainer Cristian Elseser said.

"We are going to do further tests, but it's already ruled out: He will not be going to Athens," Elseser said.

Argentina hasn't won an Olympic gold medal in 52 years and Coria had long said winning a medal in Athens was a dream of his.

He pulled out of this week's Tennis Masters Series tournament in Mason.

Under Olympic guidelines, 40th-ranked Mariano Zabaleta could replace Coria on Argentina's Olympic team. Already on the squad are No. 5 David Nalbandian, No. 9 Gaston Gaudio and No. 32 Juan Ignacio Chela.
