SPRINGFIELD TWP. - Investigators continued Thursday to sort out an attack that left a man shot and a woman beaten. The woman ended up being jailed in the shooting.
Police arrested Betty Thomas, 18, Thursday and charged her with felonious assault. They say she fired five or six shots at Grady A. Madison, but hit him only once, in the back. His wounds are not life-threatening.
The incident started about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near Roosevelt and Hamilton avenues and drew police officers from several departments. They responded to reports of "rapid gunfire" and multiple victims.
At first, Thomas appeared to be another victim when she was found bloodied and lying 50 to 75 feet away from Madison, said Sgt. Paul Szymik.
But officers soon determined that Thomas was not shot, but beaten - apparently by witnesses who said they were trying to wrestle a .380-caliber pistol away from her, police said.
Thomas, of Westwood, was hospitalized, but transferred Thursday to the Hamilton County Justice Center. Madison, of South Cumminsville, remained in serious condition at University Hospital on Thursday.
Thomas and Madison "casually knew each other," Szymik said.
