Chamber backs repeal of law

The Enquirer

The Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce endorses the repeal of Article XII, the board of trustees announced Thursday.

The Chamber's 18-member Ballot Issues Committee reviewed the issue for several months before the board voted unanimously to endorse the repeal July 26. Article XII is a charter amendment that prohibits the city from passing anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation.

Cincinnati City Council voted Wednesday to place the issue on the Nov. 2 ballot. The Ballot Issues Committee said Article XII hinders the attraction and retention of talent. Competing cities in the region have enacted laws that protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation. The committee also found more than $25 million in confirmed bookings has been lost since the enactment of Article XII.

Brown Co. teen falls short of title

A Brown County teenager entered the junior lamb competition at the state fair with more to prove than other exhibitors. He hoped to win back the grand champion title. But the best Ryan Daulton, 18, of Georgetown, could do Wednesday was a fourth-place finish for one of his six lambs. Four months after last year's fair, state agriculture officials disqualified Daulton's lamb after finding the animal had consumed a small amount of feed tainted with an illegal drug. They took back his $8,000 in proceeds from the Sale of Champions. State officials have acknowledged that the boy unknowingly purchased the tainted feed from a mill that since has been fined for the mistake. His parents said they will continue fighting a court battle to regain the 2003 title and prize money.
