Scouting the marketplace with Joy Kraft

The Insatiable Shopper

Clackety-clack. Vintage typewriter keys fashioned by artists into bracelets, earrings, cuff links, money clips and pendants spell out a new life for crippled retro writing machine parts. The Web site www.mytypewriter.com from Fairfax, Va., was started by a Charles Gu when he was searching for a manual typewriter birthday present for his wife. He now sells desktop and portable restored vintage machines that work, as well as ribbons, gifts and jewelry. Note: No salvageable machines were harmed in making this jewelry. About $45 and up. (Bracelet shown $90).

Savory skillet. These mini cast iron skillets, 51/2-inch diameter, from Swan Creek Candle Co. are filled with clean-burning soybean wax scented in yummy flavors, including gingerbread and baked apple. They burn for 18 hours. $16. Don't miss the whimsical pumpkin gourds and primitive Shaker-style furniture as well at the Keeping Room, 2420 High St., Crescent Springs.

Buckle up bag. These sturdy-strapped Seatbelt Bags are woven in summer-bright colors and lined with the same flight satin used in Air Force jackets. The body is woven with regulation seat belt strapping and sewn with tough nylon threading with zipper and magnetic snap closing - strong enough to hold 2,000 pounds of your basic necessities. Three sizes, $79.20-$94.60, at Ann's Hallmark Gold Crown store, 7735 Mall Road,Florence.
