Nicole Bailey, a 2004 Summit Country Day graduate" and Matthew Patton, a 2004 Walnut Hills High School graduate, have been involved in the Procter & Gamble Resident Scholar Program.

The inaugural program was June 7-11. The students were exposed to P&G's beauty care business, including cosmetics, hair and skin care products and antiperspirants, as well as technology development for oral care.

The program is designed to give the students a snapshot of work in research and development through hands-on experience with volunteers.

The students were able to learn how P&G builds a consumer product, works cooperatively and conducts applied research.

Nicole plans to enter Wittenberg University this fall to study chemistry and business. Matthew plans to go to Tennessee State University and study engineering.

Over-the-Rhine painting

A 4-by-5-foot painting will hang on the wall at the Emanuel Community Center, 1308 Race St., as part of a promotion to show positive images in Over-the-Rhine.

The painting, done by artist Charles Brown of Newport, will be unveiled Aug 20 in a benefit for the center.

Brown said it is time for residents of Over-the-Rhine to focus on the positive to help change the concept they have of themselves and to see what they are capable of doing.

"In this painting, I show positive images through people. I show a businessman in a suit, a successful athlete, a family and a woman in a business attire,'' Brown said. "I think this can give them a new vision as to what they can be and what they can do rather than looking at the negative images they see all the time.''

Brown helped establish an artists' co-operative in Newport.

He refers to the work as a multicultural street painting. The painting will be unveiled at the Bankers Club.

"This painting focuses on the future of the people, rather than the problems as they are now,'' Brown said.

Norwood education

The Children's Home of Cincinnati will use a $300,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education to implement the Norwood Community Learning Center project in partnership with the Norwood City Schools, Norwood Recreation Center, the Richard E. Lindner YMCA, Family & Children First Council and the TriState Education and Technology Foundation.

The purpose of the program is to eliminate barriers to learning and assist lower-achieving students in meeting state standards for academic achievement.
