The Early Word

Jump on your weekend

FYI

"Nite" returns: Late Nite Catechism is back! The news is so fresh the ink hasn't dried on the contract, and no star has been named, but the "off-Broadway" hit from Broadway in Cincinnati will take advantage of last season's sell-out run in the Aronoff's Jarson-Kaplan Theater for a January 2005 return.

The one-"nun" show that gets the audience in on the act of Catholic school spoofery will play three weeks, Jan. 11-30. Ticket information has not yet been announced.

Jackie Demaline

He's done it again: James Conlon, Cincinnati May Festival maestro, has won another award - this one called the "Pegasus Prize," an award in its 34th year at the Spoleto Festival in Italy. Italian journalists made Conlon this year's winner, announced July 15 in Italy. He was cited for his outstanding artistic skills and his long association with the Spoleto Festival, where he made his operatic debut in 1971. In particular, the jury unanimously recognized Conlon's major contribution to this year's Festival, Viktor Ullmann's opera, The Emperor of Atlantis.

Janelle Gelfand

CCM opera season: Sandra Bernhard, head of the opera department at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will make her mainstage debut this season, when she directs Handel's Ariodante in Patricia Corbett Theater, Feb. 10-13. She is already slated to direct the school's The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe in May and will lead the November studio production of The Birthday of the Infanta. Subscriptions: 556-4183 or www.ccm.uc.edu.
