Northern Kentucky news in brief

Boone County Fiscal Court meeting canceled

BURLINGTON - The Boone County Fiscal Court meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled. The next regularly scheduled fiscal court meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 24.

Town hall hearing set for Ryland Heights

RYLAND HEIGHTS - Kenton County Fiscal Court has called a town hall meeting for Tuesday for residents of Ryland Heights.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Red Barn, 9626 Decoursey Pike.

Fort Mitchell to hear tax rates, paramedics

FORT MITCHELL - City council has called a special meeting for Monday to vote on several tax rates and the annual waste collection contract and to vote on joining a special taxing district for paramedic service.

The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. at the city building, 2355 Dixie Hwy.

Council will have a final vote on an advanced life support agreement. Fort Mitchell is among eight Kenton County cities that have expressed interest in joining a special taxing district to provide paramedic service on a permanent basis starting July 1.

Crescent Springs City Council also has called a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 as officials there decide whether to join the special taxing district.

Kenton County cities and Kenton County Fiscal Court reached an agreement in June that will continue paramedic service for another year, ending June 30.

TransCare, a nonprofit corporation that provides advanced life support service to all of Kenton County, told fire officials earlier this year that yearly subscriptions and insurance payments didn't cover its operating costs.

Home builder donates cemetery to stewards

HEBRON - A historic cemetery will be saved thanks to a home builder and cemetery steward association.

Akin and Miller Land Developer donated a half-acre containing the cemetery to the Johnson-Wilson Cemetery Stewards Association.

The cemetery, in the Parlor Grove subdivision, dates to the early 1800s and contains 38 graves mostly of the Souther family. The family was one of Boone County's wealthiest farmers.

The cemetery may also be sitting atop a Fort Ancient Indian burial site.

The Johnson Wilson association is a nonprofit organization established in September 2002.

Kenton has collected $17M in child support

COVINGTON - The Kenton County Child Support Office collected more than $17 million in child support and back payments during the recent fiscal year, an increase of about $1.2 million over the 2003 fiscal year.

Kenton County has again set a collections record for the three Northern Kentucky counties, Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson said. He praised the efforts of his office staff and attorneys.

"They work so diligently and relentlessly to collect this money," Edmondson said. "This collection rate emphasizes our dedication to getting children the money they need and deserve."

The 10,000 cases Kenton County's Child Support office handles each year make it the busiest office in Northern Kentucky.
