Boxers return from state fair with medals

Good Things Happening

Arnold Bush, who has lived at Winton Terrace for 33 years, started a boxing program at the housing development 10 years ago.

In that time, the Winton Terrace Boxing Club has won titles including five championships at the Ohio State Fair boxing competition Aug. 4-7.

The club took seven boxers to the state fair. They were Dominick Lackey, 12, Steve Roddy, 13, Rashaun Bland, 23, Samuel Gatewood, 18, Mel Crossty, 18, Donald Cornell, 14, and Marcus Bush, 14, Bush's grandson.

Five of the boxers won their age category, and Crossty also earned the outstanding boxer trophy, said Bush, 67, a retiree.

More than 100 boxers competed at the state fair, Bush said.

"I'm very proud of these kids," Bush said. "I'm trying to make something out of them."

Bush said the idea for the boxing gym evolved from earlier projects. He said he used to host block parties for kids, and then he suggested that the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority build a basketball court in an open area at Winton Terrace.

After seeing the basketball court come to fruition, he thought a boxing gym also would be a good idea.

Bush said the housing authority provided space in the basement of a building on Craft Street, and he and several others cleaned it up and set up a boxing gym.

The gym has 20 to 25 regulars who train there, and he is helped by other coaches that include his sons, Branden Bush and Arnold Bush Jr., and Larry Donaldson Sr.

Bush said Donald Troendle, executive director of the housing authority, and restaurateur Buddy LaRosa help support the boxing club, which relies on donations to pay expenses and travel costs.

Domestic violence walk

Betsy Besl was working in a downtown office building near where Cheryl Dawson of Hebron was stabbed to death on Fourth Street in March 2002.

Now Besl is honoring Dawson's memory and trying to raise awareness about domestic violence through the "One Voice: Cheryl Dawson Memorial 3K Family Fitness Walk" at Sawyer Point on Sept. 26.

Besl hopes the event brings people together to celebrate families and also foster education about signs of abuse and the services available in Greater Cincinnati to help abuse victims.

"It is my vision to make domestic violence more open," Besl said.

Dawson, 37, had sought protection from her estranged husband several times in courts in Boone County and Hamilton County.

"I think that if the shame associated with this issue can be lifted by awareness, then the families involved in it will be more likely to seek help - for the victims as well as the ones committing the violence," Besl said.

Robin Dawson pleaded guilty to the stabbing death in August 2002 and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Several Greater Cincinnati organizations will be providing information at the event, including the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati, the Women's Crisis Center of Northern Kentucky, the Rape Crisis & Abuse Center of Hamilton County and Life Success Seminars near West Chester.

To register, go online to www.signmeup.com/27612 or call Mike Crane at (513)231-4734. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and younger and includes a T-shirt while supplies last.

Registration also will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the event. The walk begins at 11 a.m. on the Kroger Promenade.

After the event, there will be music by the band Richie and the Students, as well as food and drinks and 10-minute massages.

Golf tournament

The Robert L. Williams Memorial Golf Tournament is looking for players to help support the scholarship fund at Butlerville Masonic Lodge.

The event will take place at Hickory Woods Golf Course in Loveland at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The cost is $300 per team and includes golf, cart, dinner and of prizes.
