Workout partner can improve motivation and focus

Ask Dave

By Dave Patania
Enquirer contributor

Many people ask me how to stay motivated to perform exercise consistently. There are countless ways of doing so, but a favorite of mine is for people to get a training partner or "buddy."

It is very helpful to have someone to train with who can give you that extra push to stay on track during times of low motivation and/or energy. Having someone who you are scheduled to meet upon certain days and times, or who is available upon request to exercise with you, will go a long way in keeping you focused and consistent.

However, it is important for you and your partner to not be shy about challenging and motivating each other to stay on track or get more focused. You want a partner who is going to give you a kick in the rear end when needed and one who will let you know when you need to step up the energy and effort.

Many people tell me that they don't want to let their partner down and others say that they get competitive and don't miss sessions because they don't want their partner to get ahead of them in the workouts.

I have witnessed countless training partners spending more time talking and goofing around than training. While exercising, be sure to push, motivate and inspire each other. Socialize after the session is over.

My training partner and I have a great time but we exercise with total focus, attention to detail and intensity.

A partner is also beneficial in other aspects of fitness, such as nutrition. Having someone who is active and fit with whom you can trade healthful recipes with and order healthful meals at restaurants with is an added plus.
