SRO likely for Adu vs. Crew Saturday

Enquirer staff and wire reports

A sellout crowd is expected at Crew Stadium Saturday night when Columbus plays 15-year-old sensation Freddy Adu and the D.C. United in an MLS game.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

The Crew also have been selling 10-person tables in the stadium's Huntington Club for a special postgame question-and-answer session with Adu. A limited number of tables remain available at $1,000 per table, including food, and may be reserved by contacting the Crew front office at (614) 447-CREW.

Boxing

WILLIAMS CASE: Former Olympic boxer Ricardo Williams of Cincinnati will turn himself in today on cocaine-smuggling charges.

He had planned to turn himself in Monday, but his lawyer, Ken Lawson, got delayed out of town on another case. Lawson said he got permission from federal marshals to move the surrender to today.

Williams was indicted last week in Dayton, Ohio, on charges of conspiracy and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute it. Two other men were arrested.

Four years ago, Williams won an Olympic silver medal. Lawson said Williams will plead not guilty. The boxer's father said last week that his son was working toward a comeback and that the family was shocked by the allegations, hoping they weren't as serious as they sound.

Golf

U.S. AMATEUR: Oscar Alvarez of Colombia took advantage of a dried-out course following a morning of heavy rains and shot a 3-under-par 67 for the first-round lead at the U.S. Amateur in Mamaroneck, N.Y. Alvarez, a junior at BYU, had five birdies and two bogeys on the 6,775-yard East course at Winged Foot Golf Club, and was the only player to break par.

Kentucky's John Holmes (72), Ohio State's Kevin Hall (74), Xavier's Neal Grusczynski (75), Springboro's Mike Castleforte (77) and Florence's Brad Wilder (78) are among the field of 312.

Thirty-six golfers were unable to complete their round when play was called off because of lightning.

The second round begins today following the completion of the first round.

The field will be cut to 64 players, who will advance to match play, with the 36-hole final scheduled for Sunday.

KROGER OFFICIALS WIN: Robert Hodge, president of Kroger's Cincinnati/Dayton Marketing Area, and Kroger vice president of merchandising Rick Going will play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February after winning the PGA Tour's Commissioner's Cup in late June at Whistling Straits, Wis., a tournament featuring title sponsors of all events in the PGA, Champions and Nationwide tours.

Hodge, who heads the Champions Tour Kroger Classic, teamed with Going for a 62. Both will play as amateurs in the Pro-Am and will be paired with PGA Tour professionals.

Hockey

PROSPAL DEALT: Vaclav Prospal is returning to the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and will likely take the spot of forward Cory Stillman, who replaced him a year ago.

Prospal was acquired from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for a second-round pick in the 2005 draft.

NHL LABOR TALKS: With two fruitless negotiating sessions behind them and only a month left before a lockout, the league and the players association will return to the bargaining table today.

HLINKA DIES: Ivan Hlinka, 54, a former Pittsburgh Penguins coach who led the Czech Republic to a gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, died after being injured in a car crash. Horse racing

SMARTY ARRIVES: Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones arrived Monday at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky. His owners, Roy and Pat Chapman, retired the colt after he was diagnosed with bone bruises in all four hoofs.
