MASON - Police said Tuesday that more charges could be lodged against a Kentucky man accused of driving his vehicle into Garrett Turner, 10, at Paramount's Kings Island on Saturday.
Jerry J. Bryan II, 31, of Dry Ridge, remains jailed in Warren County on five charges stemming from the incident that injured Garrett. The Pendleton, Ind., boy was flown to Children's Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, where he was in serious condition Tuesday.
Authorities said the boy suffered head and chest injuries when he was hit by a Chevrolet Blazer . The SUV also hit two other pedestrians: Garrett's father, Randy, 40, and Garrett's brother, Cole, 14. They were treated for less serious injuries, police said.
"Throughout the entire incident, Jerry showed no remorse, nor did he ask about the condition of the victims," the police report said. "He just worried about begin taken to jail because he would lose his job."
A witness told police that the driver tried to leave the scene after the 8:50 p.m. crash, but stopped after the witness "jumped in front of the vehicle to stop him."
After initial denials, Bryan later admitted he was driving, and "he said that he didn't see anything in front of him, but he must have hit something because people started chasing after him," the report says.
Police said Bryan failed field sobriety tests.
Bryan told officers he had taken methadone earlier in the day to combat his prescription-painkiller habit, and later had taken a muscle relaxant. Police said they found several types of pills in Bryan's vehicle.
Bryan is charged with three counts of driving under a suspended license, a count of child endangering, and a count of operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs. His bond was set at $1.75 million. A pretrial hearing is set for next Tuesday in Mason Municipal Court.
