Varied reactions

John Kerry's speech to the 105th Veterans of Foreign Wars convention Wednesday morning had delegates recalling the words President Bush uttered Monday:

"Bush wants to take care of the world. We can't. Kerry knows we got enough going on here at home."

- Henry Killingsworth, Atlanta, Korean War veteran

"Unlike Bush, Kerry wants our allies to be in Iraq. We can't continue to suffer 90 percent of the casualties and pay 90 percent of the bill to rebuild Iraq."

- Calvin Lambert, Enon, Ohio, Vietnam War veteran

"Kerry tells the truth. Bush reminds me of what Goebbels, the guy behind Nazi Germany's propaganda, once said, 'Tell a lie often enough and eventually 50 percent of the people will believe it.' "

- Rich Homan, Franklin, W.Va., World War II veteran

"Bush has it. Kerry doesn't. Period."

- Carroll Smith, Baltimore, Vietnam War veteran

"I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Bush supporter. I'm just here because my wife likes Kerry."

- T.W. Bossidy, Poestenkill, N.Y., World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War veteran.

"Bush spoke from the heart. Kerry sounded cold, like he just memorized his speech,"

- Bob Patterson, Elkton, Md., Vietnam War veteran
