Fire departments call for extra alarms - up to five - for a variety of reasons, including a potentially large number of victims and for extra manpower.
Firefighters at the Queen City Barrel scene said the last five-alarm alarm fire they remember was one in 1993 that heavily damaged the Alexandra Apartments in Walnut Hills.
Other recent large fires:
Five-alarm in June that seriously damaged the Shadow Hill apartments on Sharon Park Lane in Sharonville.
Five-alarm in October 2003 at the Royal Crown Convention Center in Sycamore Township. The building was in the process of being condemned.
Five-alarm in January 2003 at a Clovernook Drive apartment complex in Mount Healthy. Four families were displaced. The extra alarms were called in part because it was so cold.
On Christmas Eve 2002, a five-alarm fire at a Walnut Hills house spread to a neighboring house, causing $150,000 damage.
No injuries were reported in these fires.
