Tax shortfall hurts transit authority
Cincinnati's anemic earnings-tax collections are also putting the squeeze on the region's bus service, the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority said in a statement Thursday. The transit authority relies on a 0.3 percent city earnings tax for about half of its $73.5 million operating budget. The city has told SORTA that it expects the authority's share of the tax to decline $1.2 million this year. General Manager Mike Setzer said cost-cutting measures, increased fares and route realignments have put the Metro bus system in a better position to absorb the tax shortfalls, but "we will still need to make some tough financial choices." Cincinnati City Manager Valerie Lemmie announced budget-balancing measures totaling $7.8 million last week as part of the city's effort to deal with the same problem.
