Tax shortfall hurts transit authority

Cincinnati's anemic earnings-tax collections are also putting the squeeze on the region's bus service, the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority said in a statement Thursday. The transit authority relies on a 0.3 percent city earnings tax for about half of its $73.5 million operating budget. The city has told SORTA that it expects the authority's share of the tax to decline $1.2 million this year. General Manager Mike Setzer said cost-cutting measures, increased fares and route realignments have put the Metro bus system in a better position to absorb the tax shortfalls, but "we will still need to make some tough financial choices." Cincinnati City Manager Valerie Lemmie announced budget-balancing measures totaling $7.8 million last week as part of the city's effort to deal with the same problem.

VFW convention concludes today

The 105th national Veterans of Foreign Wars convention concludes its seven-day run today at the Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center, downtown. The morning session - the last of the convention - will feature the election of a new national commander and other officers for 2004-05. A reception for the new national commander - expected to be John Furgess of Nashville - will follow in the afternoon.

Candles to light bridge for opening

More than 3,000 residents, families, businesses and business leaders will illuminate the Suspension Bridge and Northern Kentucky shoreline with candlelight 8:30-10 p.m. Monday to celebrate the grand opening of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The public is invited to participate in the procession and dedication of the center. The light of each candle will symbolize the power of change that is made by one person. Luminaria, Harmony of Light, is producing the event. Luminaria was founded in 2000 to promote unity and diversity by illuminating communities. Registration: Andie Bernard at (859) 392-2656.

TRAFFIC WATCH

The ramp from northbound Interstate 71 to westbound Interstate 275 in Hamilton County will be closed from 10 p.m. tonight until 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Detours will be posted.
