Sarvis tops second RD riding mark of Neff's
Enquirer staff and wire reports
Jockey Dean Sarvis, 36, broke an 18-year-old record by Steve Neff for victories during the Jockey Club meeting at River Downs.
Riding Imperial Sky for his third of four wins Sunday. Sarvis recorded his 77th victory of the meet. There are six days of live racing remaining at River Downs.
Sarvis, a native of Baltimore, won his first race at the age of 18 at Hialeah. He soon returned to ride on the Maryland circuit.
"Kent Desormeaux was the leading apprentice back then, and he had so many mounts it left opportunities open for another bug boy," Sarvis said. "I did pretty good riding in his shadow."
In recent years, Sarvis has done most of his riding in the Midwest, and he decided to try River Downs for the first season this year.
"I wanted to go somewhere where I could ride a lot, to get in my rhythm and have a lot of live mounts," Sarvis said. "Perry Ouzts has always been a consistent force here, and I'm just so happy to be so well received by the horsemen."
Sarvis earlier broke Neff's record for the Turf Club meeting portion at RD by two wins, 84-82. His 161 wins total for the summer is also a track record. He intends to ride at the upcoming Turfway Park meet.
