Cubs regain lead in wild-card race
The Associated Press
MONTREALGreg Maddux threw seven shutout innings for his 302nd career win and also drove in a run, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Expos Monday night.
Maddux (13-8), who became the 22nd pitcher in major league history to reach 300 wins on Aug. 7, scattered five hits, struck out two and walked none. LaTroy Hawkins got one out for his 20th save in 26 opportunities.
Chicago, swept by Houston in three straight at home over the weekend, regained the NL wild-card lead, moving a half-game ahead of idle San Diego.
Terrmel Sledge hit a two-run homer off Jon Leicester in the ninth for the Expos, who lost their third straight and fell to 3-5 on their season-high 13-game homestand.
Sammy Sosa hit a two-run double off Rocky Biddle (4-8) in the Cubs' four-run third after catching a break an inning earlier when plate umpire Ted Barrett called Montreal's Juan Rivera out on a close play at home.
With runners at second and third and one out, Rivera broke for home on Brian Schneider's grounder. First baseman Derrek Lee's throw home appeared to beat Rivera, who slid outside past catcher Paul Bako and reached with his left hand to touch the plate as he slid by.
Rivera looked up at Barrett, who made no sign until Bako came over and tagged him for the second out. Expos manager Frank Robinson argued the call to no avail.
Marlins 6, Mets 4
NEW YORK - Florida is trying to make its move in the NL wild-card race. Damion Easley, starting because of an injury to Luis Castillo, hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Marlins extended their winning streak to four.
Braves 7, Giants 6
ATLANTA - Andruw Jones capped a ninth-inning rally with a game-winning single, and J.D. Drew went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Drew led off the ninth with a single to right off Giants closer Dustin Hermanson. Julio Franco followed with another shot that rolled past right fielder Ricky Ledee for a run-scoring triple. After Hermanson walked Eli Marrero, Jones lined a 2-2 pitch into right field to drive in pinch-runner Mike Hampton with the winning run.
Pirates 5, Brewers 1
MILWAUKEE - Daryle Ward homered twice and had five RBI and Pittsburgh sent Milwaukee to its 12th straight loss. Milwaukee tied its NL record for consecutive losses, and has scored just seven runs in its last five games.
Tigers 9, Royals 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Craig Monroe homered twice and drove in five runs, and Nate Robertson threw his first career complete game. Ivan Rodriguez added a two-run homer for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak and sent the Royals to their 10th loss in 12 games.
White Sox 9, Phillies 8
CHICAGO - Timo Perez bunted in the go-ahead run and Joe Borchard hit the longest homer (504 feet) in U.S. Cellular Field history.
The game was a makeup of a June 10 rainout and the White Sox victory clinched interleague bragging rights for the AL this season, 127-125.
