FRANKFORT - Kentucky drivers love their sport-utility vehicles.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported Friday that SUV registrations in the state grew by 45 percent from 1997 to 2002. In that period, SUV registrations jumped from 205,000 to 296,000, according to the 2002 Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey, which is conducted every five years.
In the same five-year span, pickup truck registrations in Kentucky declined by nearly 8 percent, from 800,600 in 1997 to 737,700 in 2002.
The survey also said Kentucky has about one pickup truck for every six people and about one SUV for every 14 people.
About 76 percent of all trucks, including SUVs, were used for personal transportation, up from about 68 percent in 1997, according to the census figures.
