Turpin investigating report of racial slurs

Public safety notes

The Enquirer

ANDERSON TWP. - Turpin High School is investigating allegations that one or two of its students directed racial slurs at African-American members of the Walnut Hills High School marching band at Friday's varsity football game at Turpin.

If the allegations are found to be true and the students who acted inappropriately are identified, they will be disciplined, said Peggy Johnson, Turpin High School principal.

Walnut Hills High School Principal Marvin Koenig said he's satisfied that Turpin officials are taking the allegations seriously.

He said it will not affect the two schools' relationship.

Walnut Hills and Turpin will continue to compete in athletics, and the Walnut Hills' marching band will continue to perform at football games at Turpin, he said.

Hillsboro man killed in single-car crash

HILLSBORO - A single-car crash on Ohio 73 killed a Hillsboro man early Wednesday.

James H. Cooper Jr., 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said.

Cooper was driving on Ohio 73 south of Hillsboro about 12:15 a.m. when he went off the road, hit several trees and overturned, troopers said.

Cooper was not wearing a seat belt.

"We continue to see motorists who fail to buckle up," Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Lee said. "This crash involves another tragic loss of life that could have been saved had the driver been properly restrained."

3 Miami Twp. residents to assess hurricane hit

MIAMI TWP. - Three Miami Township residents will be helping Floridians assess damage from Hurricane Frances after the Federal Emergency Management Agency asked the township fire department for help.

The three citizens - Lee Hite, Helmut Geiser and Robert Wilks- are part of a new program in the suburban Clermont County township known as the Community Emergency Response Team.

They will be helping hurricane-ravaged areas in Florida inventory storm damage to people's homes.

The men will be in Florida for up to two weeks.
