LOUISVILLE - Prosecutors said Thursday they will seek the death penalty against a Louisville man who fled the state after his wife and son were killed last year.
Shawn Windsor was arrested by U.S. marshals July 15 in North Carolina. He had been a fugitive since the bodies of Betty Windsor, 27, and their 8-year-old son, Corey, were found in Shawn Windsor's apartment in downtown Louisville on Dec. 28. A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Windsor on two counts of murder.
He also was indicted for allegedly violating a protective order obtained by his wife after he was charged with domestic-violence assault against her in July 2003.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Haynie, who focuses on prosecuting domestic-violence cases, said in a hearing in Jefferson County Circuit Court on Thursday that prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty for Windsor.
Haynie said the office also would not offer Windsor a plea deal.
"Multiple deaths occurred, as well as, there was a (domestic-violence order) in effect at the time she was murdered," Haynie said.
Windsor remains in jail on a $1 million bond. His next court hearing is Oct. 28.
Authorities had few leads on Windsor's whereabouts in the months after the killings.
He was even featured on America's Most Wanted, the nationally televised crime-fighting show.
U.S. marshals said media reports about an abandoned car led to tips about Windsor's whereabouts, including reports that he had been staying at homeless shelters in Nashville, Tenn.
Investigators traced Windsor to North Carolina, where he had moved in late January to check into a treatment center for an apparent drug abuse problem.
Windsor was arrested at a junk yard where he was employed in Shelby, N.C., about 40 miles west of Charlotte.
