The Associated Press
OAKVILLE, Ontario - Joey Sindelar shot a 5-under 66 Thursday and held a two-stroke lead over Pat Perez in the rain-delayed opening round of the Canadian Open.
With a five-hour delay because of rain, half the field at Glen Abbey did not finish the first round and four players didn't even tee off.
Perez, who is 140th on the PGA Tour money list and is in jeopardy of losing his card, had a 3-under 68. Only 10 other players among the early starters broke par.
Vijay Singh had to wait until nearly 6 p.m. to start his first tournament as golf's No. 1 player and was 3 over after five holes.
GERMAN MASTERS: Padraig Harrington shot a 6-under 66 for a one-stroke lead over Alex Cejka at Pulheim, Germany.
KOREAN OPEN: Ernie Els shot a 71 and was three strokes behind leader Hendrik Buhrmann at Seoul, South Korea.
JAPAN TOUR: Retief Goosen shot an even-par 70 at Inzai, Japan, leaving him five strokes behind leaders Scott Laycock and Y.E. Yang.

ALI REQUESTS COMMISSION: Muhammad Ali asked Congress to create a U.S. Boxing Commission, saying oversight by the federal government is needed to protect boxers from exploitation and injury. His testimony was read by his wife, Lonnie Ali, because he suffers from Parkinson's disease.
Legislation authored by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., would create a three-person commission to license boxers, managers, promoters and sanctioning organizations and impose uniform health and safety standards.

SAINT JOSEPH'S: Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli signed a contract extension that will keep him with the school through 2012. He led the Hawks to a 30-2 record last season, their best in team history, and is 179-99 over nine seasons.
College football
CONNECTICUT: Coach Randy Edsall has a new contract worth $5.3 million over six years. Edsall, in his sixth season at UConn, will earn just less than $900,000 annually - up from his previous salary of about $200,000.
Edsall built the Huskies program, which went 9-3 last season, from a Division I-AA team to a I-A team that is a new member of the Big East.
Horse racing
SMARTY'S FEE: Smarty Jones' first-year stud fee was set at $100,000 per live foal. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner retired to Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., on Aug. 16.
NBA
CAVALIERS: Center Jake Tsakalidis, who played 40 games for Memphis last season, signed an offer sheet with Cleveland for an undisclosed amount. The Grizzlies have 15 days to match the proposal for Tsakalidis, who averaged 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds last season.
WARRIORS: Forward Christian Laettner, acquired in a trade less than a month ago from Dallas, was waived. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.8 rebounds last season.
Hockey
STARS: Dallas signed defenseman Patrick Traverse, who has played 278 career NHL games and spent last season with Hamilton of the American Hockey League, to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
PREDATORS: Center Vernon Fiddler re-signed with Nashville after playing most of last season in the AHL. He has four goals and two assists in 36 NHL games.
