Display weighs human cost of war

The Enquirer

More than a thousand pairs of combat boots and a thousand pairs of shoes will memorialize the war dead in a display at Xavier University Sept. 20- 22. The "Eyes Wide Open: the Human Cost of War in Iraq" exhibit opened in Chicago's Federal Plaza in January with 500 pairs of boots.

Now 1,000 pairs of boots bear the name tags of American troops killed during the U.S.-Iraq conflict. And each pair of shoes represents 10 Iraqi civilians killed, said Sister Alice Gerdeman of the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center in Cincinnati. She said the group doesn't endorse a political candidate or point of view, but it wants people to consider the cost of war. The exhibit will be at the Academic Mall at Xavier. The multimedia portion will be playing in Xavier's main library. Both are open to the public from 4 to 10 p.m.

Store to sell wine, liquor on Sunday

Today the Party Source in Bellevue will become the first shop in Kentucky - and in Greater Cincinnati - to sell wine and liquor on Sundays. Operators of the liquor mega-store will celebrate with a ribbon-cutting and sale at noon. The change comes after the Bellevue City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to allow Sunday sales of packaged liquor and wine. The vote was possible because of a recent Kentucky Court of Appeals ruling that said state law gives local governments the authority to regulate wine and package-liquor sales. The store, west of the Interstate 471 bridge, has been open on Sundays since 1997, selling what it could legally - beer, food and party supplies.

$6M juvenile center to open

Clermont County will open its new $6 million Juvenile Detention Center later this month, which juvenile court officials say will offer improved educational and treatment services. The 36-bed facility, at 28,000 square feet - five times as large as the current detention center, is a collaborative effort between Clermont and Brown counties with a minimum of three beds exclusively reserved for Brown County. The facility includes a gymnasium and will provide individual, family and group treatment. A dedication ceremony is set for Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the new facility, at 2340 Clermont Center Drive in Batavia. It was funded through the Ohio Department of Youth Services, bond proceeds and the county's general fund.

TRAFFIC WATCH

One lane on the Freeman Avenue northbound entrance ramp and southbound exit ramp off Interstate 75 in the West End will close between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. today for milling and repaving.
