Must-see
The Benefactor debut, 8 p.m., Channels 9, 22.
How do you play a game with no rules, standards or goals?
It isn't easy, but this reality show has some real players. There's a slender model who takes pride in his spiky hair. There's a stocky football player who takes pride in her toughness. There are bubbly socializers and a second-grade teacher who soon hates almost everyone.
There are 16 people competing for $1 million in a game led by Mark Cuban, the dot-com billionaire, who owns the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. Tonight, he eliminates three without defining the game.
All of this is frustrating to watch, yet kind of interesting. As a lively and likable guy, Cuban easily "out-trumps" other reality stars.
I Do (But I Don't), 9-11 p.m., Lifetime.
A beautiful wedding planner (Denise Richards) watches others wed after her own marriage crumbled. Then she meets a handsome fireman (Dean Cain).
Coming up are huge contrivances and coincidences. Still, it's fun, with enough humor to keep us entertained.
Worth watching
7th Heaven season-opener, 8 p.m., Channels 64, 26. David Gallagher returns as Simon, suddenly with a new girlfriend and a casual approach to sex. Barry Watson also returns as Matt, trying to offer advice. More complications arise, especially with Lucy being a pregnant overachiever. There are some scattered moments of good comedy, plus moments that seem slow and stilted.
Everwood season-opener, 9 p.m., Channels 64, 26. Ephram is back home and is reunited with a cheery girlfriend and an enviable life. Alas, he's pouting about something and his father is having second thoughts about not telling Ephram that Madison is pregnant. This is a heavy episode, partly lightened by Scott Wolf (Party of Five) as a buoyant town newcomer.
Everybody Loves Raymond, 9 p.m., Channels 12, 7. Here's a rerun of the season-finale including the long, two-brother scene with Ray and Robert. It's skillfully done but no match for the show's usual fun.
Las Vegas season-opener, 9 p.m., Channels 5, 2. Danny is back from the war, but his odd behavior has everyone worried.
LAX debut, 10 p.m., Channels 5, 2. How many things can go wrong in one day at an airport in Los Angeles? This overcrowded hour has drunken pilots, a jilted bride, a bomb scare, a political plane and more. It's an overwrought hour, presided over by Heather Locklear and Blair Underwood. It also leaves us wondering what's left for the second episode.
Extreme Oil debut, 10 p.m., Channel 16. This three-week series starts with a visit to the Caspian Sea where massive corruption of former Soviet republics makes oil projects difficult.
