Candidates dress American

By Lauren Bishop
Enquirer staff writer

Want to dress like a presidential candidate (or one of their wives or daughters)? We did some research and found out where you can get clothes by some of their favorite designers - although it may take a drive.

• President Bush shops for suits at Chicago-based Oxxford Clothes. For about $2,500, you can get these suits at Hunt Club Clothiers, downtown. (513) 721-2004.

• Democratic candidate John Kerry sports suits from Southwick Clothing of Lawrence, Mass. The suits will set you back $800-$900. To get one around here, you'll have to travel about two hours to Hammonds Clothiers in Lancaster, Ohio. (740) 653-0663.

• High-profile Democrats and Republicans alike - including Kerry and the first President Bush - have been spotted wearing $65 ties from Massachusetts-based Vineyard Vines, which feature preppy patterns such as sailboats and golf clubs.

Find them at three Hyde Park shops: Belle Maison, 871-1109; Khaki's, 871-1212; and Delamere & Hopkins, 871-3474.

• First lady Laura Bush's favorite designers include Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. Saks Fifth Avenue, downtown, holds de la Renta trunk shows twice a year; 421-6800. 2700 Erie in Hyde Park carries de la Renta accessories, 533-0042.

• Rule of thumb if you want to dress like Jenna or Barbara Bush: American and Italian designers are OK, but just say non to French. The twins like Oscar de la Renta, as well as New York designer Zac Posen. Some of his creations can be found at 2700 Erie in Hyde Park.

Dallas-born Lela Rose has created several outfits for the twins. Find some of her designs at Leal in Columbus; (614) 488-6400. Jenna also has said she lives in C&C California T-shirts, available at Suki in Hyde Park. 751-7854.

• Teresa Heinz Kerry also likes de la Renta and Chanel. Saks carries Chanel accessories and handbags and can special order clothing; 421-6800.

• Alexandra Kerry likes New York designer Marc Jacobs and Vanessa likes C&C California T-shirts, too. Saks can order Marc Jacobs; 421-6800.
