Lobbyist fined in stockbroker investigation
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND - A judge has fined a Republican lobbyist $1,000 and put him on probation for six months for helping a stockbroker get state investment business.
Andrew J. Futey, 38, was sentenced by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Richard J. McMonagle on Thursday on his guilty plea to a misdemeanor complicity charge. The charge said a former chief of staff for state Treasurer Joseph Deters placed Frank Gruttadauria on a list of preferred brokers with Futey's help.
Deters, 47, filed as a write-in candidate Monday for Hamilton County prosecutor after current prosecutor Mike Allen withdrew from the race amid a sex scandal. Allen's withdrawal left Hamilton County voters with only write-in candidates in the Nov. 2 election. Deters was the prosecutor before Allen was appointed in 1999 when Deters moved into the treasurer's job.
Deters has denied all wrongdoing and has not been charged.
Gruttadauria is serving a 17-year sentence for bilking clients out of $125 million. He pleaded guilty in March to state charges and agreed to cooperate with a grand jury investigation.
Matthew Borges, 32, of Columbus, former chief of staff to Deters, was convicted in August of misuse of a public office. He pleaded guilty to giving preferential treatment, including lucrative trades, to some brokers.
Deters' fund-raiser, Eric Sagun, 35, of Columbus, was convicted of an election law violation for soliciting a contribution from Gruttadauria. The $50,000 donation was funneled to the private operating account of the Hamilton County Republican Party in Cincinnati.
