Classic comes up Roses in May

Huge favorite earns berth in Breeders' Cup Classic Oct. 30 in Texas

FLORENCE - Roses in May cemented his status as a leading active thoroughbred Saturday at Turfway Park with a four-length victory in the Kentucky Cup Classic.

Other favorites on the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions had rough going, but Roses in May easily handled a field of seven older horses and earned himself a start in the Breeders' Cup Classic Oct. 30 at Lone Star Park in Texas.

Roses in May, a 3-to-10 favorite, turned back a head-of-the-stretch challenge by runner-up Pie N Burger and won going away.

Roses in May's trainer, Dale Romans, said, "That was perfect. He broke well, relaxed, rated well, and after the race was over, he worked out well.

"We will train him right up to the Breeders' Cup Classic, and I think we are going to send him to Lone Star Park early."

Romans said he'd also like to shoot for an Eclipse Award for Roses in May's owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ramsey. "I think it (a possible Eclipse Award) will come down to the Breeders' Cup Classic and if he, Birdstone Pleasantly Perfect or Gbostzapper win the race, then they should be crowned the champion."

Punch Appeal, ridden by Shane Sellers, became the only other favorite to win Saturday when he nipped Carmandia by 13/4 lengths in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said he chose Saturday's race as a good prep for the Alcibiades at Keeneland. "The game plan is to bring her to the rest of my stable at Churchill Downs and train her up to the race," he said.

One of the winners may not be advancing to the Breeders' Cup. Robert Holthus, who trains Kentucky Cup Juvenile winner Greater Good, said, "I'll talk it over with (owner) Lewis Lakin, but I don't think we'll be going."

After the race, trainer D.Wayne Lukas ranted at track officials near the winners' circle, charging them with preventing his Storied Cat from wearing the blinkers Lukas said he is accustomed to wearing.

Track president Bob Elliston said the dispute was resolved after Lukas was shown Storied Cat wearing blinkers in videotapes of the horse's last race.

"We got it right," Elliston said. "He saw the tape and apologized."

Lukas was happier after Susan's Angel gave him a record 14th Kentucky Cup victory by upsetting favorite Mayo on the Side. Mayo's jockey, Robby Albarado, said, "She ran very well. We just couldn't catch the winner."

Robert Holthus' Level Playingfield won the Kentucky Cup Sprint over favorite Cuvee.

BELMONT PARK: Trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Edgar Prado each claimed two stakes races Saturday, including a combined effort in the $200,000 Belmont Breeders' Cup won by Senor Swinger. Prado picked up his other stakes win aboard Feline Story in the Grade 3 $100,000 Floral Park Handicap. Baffert also took the Grade II Jerome Handicap for 3-year-olds with the front-running Teton Forest.

In the Breeders' Cup, run on a soft turf course, Senor Swinger powered to a four-length win over favorite Stroll.

Senor Swinger settled in third in the four-horse field. Gulch Approval set the pace and Stroll ran second. Prado angled Senor Swinger to the outside turning for home and the 4-year-old surged past.

"It was a slow, comfortable pace," said Prado. "The soft turf and everything combined to work out good."

Senor Swinger covered the 1 1-8 miles in 1:52.72 and paid $6.80 and $2.50. Stroll returned $2.20. B.A. Way was third. There was no show wagering.

In the Floral Park Handicap for fillies and mares, Feline Story edged pacesetting Cologny by a neck.

Feline Story, a 3-year-old filly trained by Stanley Hough, improved her career record to five wins in 12 starts.

"She broke bad, but I didn't rush her," Prado said. "When I got into my filly, she really responded."

Feline Story covered six furlongs in 1:10.69 and paid $4.70, $2.90 and $2.20. Cologny returned $3.30 and $2.20. Travelator paid $2.30 to show.

In the Jerome Handicap for 3-year-olds, Teton Forest, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, cruised to a six-length win, covering a mile in 1:35.74 and paying $6.60, $3.10 and $2.70.

Ice Wynnd Fire returned $2.70 and $2.40, and Mahzouz paid $4.60 to show.
