LSU tumbles while Auburn rises after close win
Top 25 poll
By Ralph D. Russo The Associated Press
LSU fell out of the top 10 Sunday while Auburn moved in, the result of a one-point game decided by a second-chance extra point.
Defending BCS champion LSU dropped eight spots to No. 13 in The Associated Press media poll after losing 10-9 at Auburn on Saturday. Auburn moved up five spots to No. 9.
"Is this a turning point? No, I think it's just a point that people will recognize that we've got a pretty decent team and things are going to just heat up on us," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said Sunday. "We're going to see if we can handle it."
The top four teams in the rankings were unchanged with Southern California keeping a firm hold on No. 1 with 54 first-place votes and 1,613 points.
No. 2 Oklahoma had 10 first-place votes and 1,562 points. No. 3 Georgia received the remaining first-place vote, despite showing little offense in a 13-3 victory over Marshall. No. 4 Miami, like USC and Oklahoma, won easily on Saturday.
LSU's fall helped No. 5 Texas move up one spot during an off week. No. 6 West Virginia also moved up one spot after beating No. 23 Maryland in overtime.
No. 7 Ohio State jumped up two spots after beating North Carolina State on the road. Florida State held steady at No. 8, and California, which had its game against Southern Mississippi postponed by Hurricane Ivan, did the same at No. 10.
Tennessee, the winner of Saturday's other big Southeastern Conference game, moved up a spot to No. 11 after edging past Florida 30-28 on a late field goal. The Gators dropped five spots to No. 16.
"It's something to build on. It was not pretty a lot of the way, but it's a win," Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said.
Auburn plays The Citadel on Saturday while Tennessee should get a break against Louisiana Tech. The next week, the Volunteers and Tigers meet in Knoxville.
Auburn's win over LSU hints at a role reversal for the SEC West rivals.
Last season Auburn was highly touted in the preseason with national title hopes, but it was LSU that made a championship run with little hype.
Now with little fanfare Auburn has taken the early lead in the SEC West, while LSU struggles to find offensive consistency.
The difference between the two teams is slim, though.
Auburn scored a tying touchdown Saturday with just over a minute left, but kicker John Vaughn missed his first shot at the go-ahead PAT. A penalty on LSU gave Vaughn another try and he booted it through.
"We need to get better from this, learn our lessons, grow, mature," LSU coach Nick Saban said.
It was almost another narrow escape by LSU, which won its opener when Oregon State's kicker missed three extra points.
Wins by Auburn and Tennessee shook up the order of the Top 25, but with few upsets, most of the members remained the same.
Arizona State's surprisingly easy 44-7 win over Iowa jumped the unbeaten Sun Devils (3-0) into the rankings at No. 22 and knocked the Hawkeyes out.
Oklahoma State (3-0) was the only other team to enter the rankings this week, taking the 25th spot and giving the Big 12 a third team in the poll, along with Oklahoma and Texas.
Last week the Big 12 had just two ranked teams, the fewest ever for the 8-year-old conference.
Iowa tumbled out of the rankings after being 16th and Memphis' first appearance in the poll lasted just one week. The Tigers were No. 25 last week, but needed a frantic 21-point comeback in the final four minutes to beat lowly Arkansas State on the road.
Virginia is No. 12 after its third straight lopsided victory, followed by LSU, Utah and Purdue.
No. 17 is Fresno State followed by three Big Ten teams - Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Boise State moved up two spots to 21 and Louisville remained 24th.
